Ibn Khaldoun’s Muqaddima Seeks UNESCO Memory Register Spot

Tunisia has announced a coordinated effort with Algeria, Turkey, and Egypt to submit a joint application for the inscription of Ibn Khaldoun's "Muqaddima" on UNESCO's "Memory of the World" register. This initiative recognizes the exceptional historical and scientific value of the seminal work by Abderrahmane Ibn Mohammed Ibn Khaldoun. The Permanent Delegation of Tunisia to UNESCO indicated that Tunisia spearheaded the coordination of this application approximately a year ago.

The joint dossier aims for inscription during the 2026-2027 cycle, demonstrating a shared commitment to preserving and promoting global documentary heritage. The application is currently undergoing evaluation by accredited expert committees within the organization. Regular follow-up on the "Muqaddima" candidacy will be maintained by Tunisia, ensuring full coordination among all involved parties and institutions.

While Ibn Khaldoun was born in Tunisia, he spent a significant period of his life in Algeria, specifically in the Tiaret region, where he authored the "Muqaddima." Historical evidence of his time in Algeria is still visible today, notably the Ibn Khaldoun cave in the Frenda region. An announcement regarding the documentary heritage elements joining the "Memory of the World" register is anticipated during the UNESCO Executive Board meeting in spring 2027.
