Multinational Drills Enhance Maritime Security with Algerian Forces

The 21st edition of the multinational 'Phoenix Express 2026' naval exercises recently concluded, seeing the participation of Algerian naval units alongside forces from 13 other nations. Organized by the U.S. Naval Forces Africa and led by the U.S. Sixth Fleet, the drills were hosted by the Tunisian Navy at its La Goulette naval base.

Spanning 12 days from September 7 to September 19, the exercise encompassed two main phases. The initial phase focused on land-based and in-port activities, including the operation of a joint communications center, operational information exchange, and specialized technical and legal workshops. The second phase shifted to sea, conducting tactical naval training that featured ship inspection and boarding operations, search and rescue missions, and ordnance disposal training. Participants also exchanged expertise on confronting chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear risks.

In addition to practical at-sea training, forces engaged in exercises via maritime awareness simulation centers, which enabled digital tracking of vessel movements and improved coordination between naval units and coastal authorities in various security scenarios. The 'Phoenix Express' series is identified by the United States Africa Command as one of three regional naval exercises led by U.S. Naval Forces Africa, forming part of a strategy to bolster cooperation between African nations and international partners. This collaborative effort aims to address diverse challenges related to maritime security, with Algeria's participation demonstrating its commitment to regional stability and cooperative defense.
