New Guiding Law Targets Algerian Agriculture Modernization

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has directed the preparation of a new, more effective guiding law for Algeria's agricultural sector. This presidential directive, announced following a Council of Ministers meeting, aims to modernize the regulatory framework governing agricultural activities and ensure its alignment with ongoing transformations within the sector. Experts in the agricultural field have underscored the importance of this decision, noting its potential to enhance land valuation, reduce imports, and accelerate Algeria's progress towards greater self-sufficiency in food production.

Agricultural experts anticipate that the revised law will facilitate a robust rebuilding of agricultural policy, grounded in precise data to identify production needs and determine suitable land areas for various crops. This strategic approach is expected to bolster the efficiency of land utilization and significantly increase production yields, particularly for strategic crops. The initiative also emphasizes integrating digitalization and scientific research within the sector, while adapting agricultural practices to prevailing climate changes and fostering the development of investment and food industries.

To underpin the new law's effectiveness, President Tebboune issued several complementary directives. These include establishing a monthly bulletin and tasking governors with meticulous oversight to ascertain production rates and quantities for diverse grain types, including soft and hard wheat. Furthermore, the President mandated the immediate digitalization of the payment system for agricultural crop agencies under the Algerian Professional Office for Cereals (OAIC), alongside close collaboration with the National Office of Statistics. A national program for soil surveying, analysis, and classification of agricultural land types is also set to be launched to provide foundational data for optimized planning and enhanced local production.
