Parliament Begins Debate on Penal, Military Justice Codes

The People's National Assembly has initiated discussions on two significant draft laws: the Penal Code and the Military Justice Code. Justice Minister Lotfi Boudjemaa presented these projects to the Legal and Administrative Affairs, Freedoms, and Human Rights Committee of the Assembly. This meeting, presided over by Committee President Omar Messaoudi and attended by Minister of Relations with Parliament Nadjiba Djilali, represents a pivotal legislative development for the nation.

The proposed Penal Code aims to modify and supplement Ordinance No. 66-156. This legislative initiative underscores a firm political will from the country's high authorities to actively combat serious crimes and ensure general deterrence, thereby protecting the homeland and its citizens. A professor of public law has noted that the amendment project is directed towards strengthening penalties for various offenses.

The discussion of the Penal Code is notably the first legislative project to be considered during the tenth parliamentary session, with the Military Justice Code also under review. These legislative projects highlight Algeria's ongoing commitment to evolving its legal framework to meet contemporary challenges and reinforce judicial sovereignty.
