Billions Allocated to Algerian Cancer Fund, New Treatments
Algeria has significantly enhanced its national healthcare response to cancer by introducing 52 innovative treatments into its pharmacopeia. This development, which notably includes immunotherapy and targeted therapies, was officially announced by the Minister of Health, Mohamed Seddik Aït Messaoudene, during the 2nd International Congress of Cancer Patients held in Algiers. The strategic integration of these therapies is part of a broader government effort aimed at providing rapid access to care, advanced diagnostics, and a complete overhaul of patient follow-up.
A substantial financial commitment underpins this therapeutic expansion. The national cancer fund has been allocated over 73 billion dinars, supported by a recurring annual endowment of 40 billion dinars. For the 2026 fiscal year, a specific envelope of 40 billion dinars is dedicated to oncological treatments. This significant investment aims to streamline supply chains, preempt logistical challenges, and prevent shortages of essential medications and consumables to ensure continuous patient care.
In parallel with the new treatments and funding, Algeria is reinforcing its healthcare infrastructure. The public health network currently operates 15 specialized cancer centers, 24 radiotherapy units, and a fleet of 61 linear accelerators. Plans are underway to expand this capacity by 2028, with the deployment of 25 new services and the acquisition of an additional 16 accelerators. Furthermore, the activation of the Tizi Ouzou PET Scan is anticipated by the end of the current year, following its relocation to a more suitable hospital setting.
Beyond medical and material provisions, the Ministry of Health is committed to modernizing clinical governance, aligning with directives issued by the presidency. This public initiative is integrated into Algeria's National Strategy 2025-2035, which places primary emphasis on prevention and early detection. Key modernization efforts include the widespread implementation of electronic medical records, automated appointment scheduling, and digital traceability for radiotherapy protocols, all designed to reduce patient waiting lists and enhance the efficiency of healthcare delivery across the nation.
