UN Security Council Reform Urged to Include Permanent African Seat

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres advocated for a reform of the UN Security Council, specifically to guarantee permanent African representation. Speaking in New York during his opening address at the general debate of the 81st session of the General Assembly, Mr. Guterres emphasized that a 21st-century Security Council lacking permanent African representation is both "unfair and indefensible."

The Secretary-General observed that current global institutions continue to reflect power realities and interests from a largely bygone era, underscoring the necessity for contemporary adjustments. He asserted that the time has come for the Security Council to undergo reform to accurately reflect the world's current landscape.

Guterres further called for a world built upon interdependence, international law, and shared rules, moving away from fragmentation into rival blocs. He advocated for a 'networked multipolarity,' highlighting the importance of wise power exercise to construct a future beneficial to all.
