Dual Nationals Travel to Algeria with Expired Passports Until 2026

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs has announced an exceptional measure to facilitate travel for Algerian dual nationals. In application of instructions from the President of the Republic, this provision allows individuals holding both Algerian and foreign nationalities to enter and exit Algerian territory using an expired Algerian biometric passport or national identity card. This special arrangement is valid until December 31, 2026.

Under these new rules, dual nationals must present a valid foreign passport in conjunction with their expired Algerian travel document. It is important to note that this facility is exclusively for those with dual nationality; Algerians possessing only Algerian citizenship cannot avail themselves of this provision. Furthermore, the regulations stipulate that the travel documents presented upon exiting Algerian territory must be identical to those used for entry.

Specific guidelines are also in place for children aged 15 and younger. If these children hold a valid foreign passport but do not possess an Algerian identity document and are traveling with their parents or legal guardians, they are permitted to enter Algeria without a visa until the end of 2026. This requires the presentation of their foreign passport alongside an Algerian birth certificate or family record book. In cases where the identity on the foreign passport does not precisely match the Algerian documents, carrying both a birth certificate and the family record book is recommended.

This initiative underscores the government's commitment to supporting its diaspora by simplifying administrative procedures for international travel. While these facilitative measures are in effect, it is always advisable for travelers to consult with the Algerian consulate in their jurisdiction before planning any journeys to ensure they have the most current information and to avoid any potential confusion.
