Djen Djen Port Executes Third Chinese Steel Transshipment to Djibouti
On September 20, the Port of Djen Djen in Jijel successfully executed its third transshipment operation of Chinese steel destined for Djibouti in 2026. The operation involved 5,700 tonnes of steel, comprising 537 coils that arrived from China aboard the MV SEADANCE. After being received at the quay, the cargo was re-expedited to its final destination in Djibouti, utilizing Djen Djen as a pivotal transit point in an international logistics chain.
This latest operation highlights the port's evolving role beyond traditional national import and export activities. The Port of Djen Djen (EPDJ), a subsidiary of the public Serport group, has described this activity as reinforcing the port's integration into global transport and logistics networks, positioning it as a crucial link between international maritime shipping lines and regional markets. The initial transshipment operation, a national first for Algeria, took place in late January 2026, with the EPDJ confirming this recent event as the third of its kind this year.
The ongoing success of these transshipment activities aligns with Algeria's broader strategic vision for its ports. In January 2026, the Ministry of Interior, Local Collectivities and Transport outlined transshipment as a key step in transforming national ports into regional and international logistics platforms. The Port of Djen Djen's strategic objective, as stated by the EPDJ, is to become a major hub in the Mediterranean, supported by ongoing infrastructure developments including the recent reception of a 17-hectare container terminal, the commissioning of four new berths in May 2026, and its advantageous location less than 50 miles from the maritime route connecting the Suez Canal to the Strait of Gibraltar.
