New 300,000 m³/Day Desalination Project Progresses for Tizi Ouzou

Algeria is accelerating its national response plan to address structural drought and water stress, with the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou initiating a significant step towards a new water supply solution. Thirteen coastal sites have been pre-selected to host a mega-desalination plant capable of producing 300,000 cubic meters of water per day. The Algerian Desalination Company (ADC) is responsible for this project, which aims to ensure a sustainable water supply for the region and neighboring communities.

Local authorities, led by Wali Abou Bakr Seddik Boucetta, have formally identified the thirteen potential locations for the future seawater desalination plant. The search for suitable land involved an initial identification of eight sites, followed by an additional five options identified during a prospecting mission on March 25 along the coastlines of Azeffoun and Iflissen. All topographical and land surveys have been submitted to the Algerian Desalination Company, which will conduct comparative analyses to determine the parcel offering optimal environmental, economic, and structural feasibility guarantees.

During coordination meetings, the wali urged all stakeholders to expedite the study timelines. The stated objective is to validate the final site choice without delay, which is a prerequisite for launching administrative procedures and commencing construction works. Once operational, this large-scale facility is intended to be a primary contributor to local water sovereignty, offering lasting relief from pressure on traditional water resources in the region. This progression marks a crucial stage in providing a durable response to the water stress affecting the area.
