Sonatrach, Sonidep Expand Cooperation to Niger’s Bilma Oil Blocks

Algeria and Niger are actively expanding their oil cooperation, with recent discussions focusing on the evaluation of new hydrocarbon blocks in Niger, including the promising Bilma area. The Algerian Minister of Hydrocarbons, accompanied by officials from Sonatrach, visited Niger to oversee these joint projects alongside the Nigerien Oil Company, Sonidep, underscoring a deepening bilateral engagement in the energy sector.

Preparatory work for the Bilma block is already underway in Niger, as evidenced by a September workshop in Agadez that addressed waste management plans related to its exclusive research authorization. This forms part of the ongoing contract between the Nigerien state and Sonidep, while both nations also continue to advance exploration efforts on the Kafra permit, further solidifying their shared commitment to regional energy development.

The partnership between Sonatrach and Sonidep has seen significant reinforcement in recent months. Last June, several memorandums of understanding were signed, covering crucial areas such as seismic acquisition, data processing, and various oil services. This robust collaboration has also extended into the commercial sphere, notably with the joint marketing of Nigerien crude oil from Benin in August 2026 and the initial deliveries of Algerian Jet A1 fuel to Niger, showcasing a comprehensive and mutually beneficial energy alliance.
