Greece, Algeria Plan New Business Forum, Direct Air Link
Greek Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis's recent visit to Algiers marked a significant step in enhancing strategic cooperation with Algeria. During his reception by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, concrete plans were discussed to deepen bilateral relations across key sectors. The visit aimed to open a new era in the historic friendship between the two nations, laying foundations for future collaborative endeavors.
President Tebboune expressed Algeria's desire to host a Greek-Algerian business forum to encourage Greek investments and facilitate the transfer of agricultural know-how from Greece. A significant development announced was the expected completion of procedures for a direct Algiers-Athens air link before the end of 2026, promising improved connectivity. Mr. Kaklamanis, who also met with Azouz Nasri, President of the Council of the Nation, and Dr. Khalida Boufedeche, President of the National People's Assembly, received a warm welcome from Algerian leadership.
Speaker Kaklamanis praised Algeria as a secure and stable country in the Southeast Mediterranean, identifying significant potential for investments and growth in areas such as energy, maritime transport, education, culture, and tourism. He affirmed Greece's commitment to assist Algeria in upgrading its relationship with the European Union, acknowledging Algeria's role as a "pole of stability and peace" in the region. The parliamentary exchange culminated in the signing of a cooperation memorandum between the two legislative bodies.
The discussions also touched upon mutual support for international principles, with Mr. Nasri emphasizing the importance of addressing issues concerning Western Sahara and implementing UN resolutions for an independent Palestinian state, a position the Greek Parliament also supports. This shared commitment to international legal frameworks, alongside historical ties spanning two millennia, underpins the positive trajectory of Algerian-Greek relations, fostering stability and mutual development.
