Algeria will celebrate National Imam Day tomorrow, Sunday, September 15, under the theme “From Jihad and Liberation to Construction and Development.” This annual event holds special significance this year as it coincides with the upcoming celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

National Imam Day, established in 2021 by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, serves as an occasion to honor the role and mission of Algeria’s imams and scholars in educating the public on the principles of Islam. Their contributions have been crucial in preserving the nation’s identity and religious values through their moderate and balanced teachings, which adhere to Algeria’s national religious reference.

In addition to combating extremism, Algeria’s imams have played a key role in promoting ethical standards in society and fostering values of charity and solidarity. Whether through mosque sermons, Quranic schools, or awareness campaigns, their efforts have had a lasting impact on Algerian society.

Recognizing the importance of the imam’s role in the community, the Algerian government has placed special emphasis on this group. This commitment was solidified in February when the government approved a new compensation system for imams, as announced during a cabinet meeting chaired by President Tebboune. This decision marked a significant achievement for the imams, adding value to their service.

This focus on imams is further highlighted by the Executive Decree No. 24-130, issued on April 9, 2024, which amends the 2018 decree concerning the status of religious officials. The updated law outlines the career paths, roles, and conditions for promotion of imams, with a special emphasis on the duties of senior imams in promoting national unity and addressing social issues.

As part of the official celebration of National Imam Day, a national symposium on the role of Quran teachers and imams in supporting the liberation revolution will be held in Sétif.
