UN Security Council: Bendjama Advocates for “Immediate Ceasefire” in Gaza and Lebanon

Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, made a strong case on Thursday for an immediate ceasefire in both Gaza and Lebanon, emphasizing the need to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

Key Points from Bendjama’s Address

  • Call for Ceasefire: Bendjama stressed that the first step towards achieving comprehensive calm in the region is an immediate ceasefire in both Gaza and Lebanon.
  • Implementation of Resolution 1701: Algeria believes that the only way to ensure stability in Lebanon and peace in the region is through the strict and immediate implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
  • Lebanese Army Deployment: This includes the deployment of the Lebanese army across all Lebanese territory within internationally recognized borders, along with the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territories.
  • Warning of Escalation: Bendjama reiterated Algeria’s warning that Israeli military operations will not stop at Gaza and Lebanon, cautioning that the Israeli aggression “will not be satisfied with Lebanon.”
  • Root Causes: He emphasized that the real and permanent threat to the Middle East will always be the continued occupation of Arab lands in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria by Israel.

Criticism of UN Security Council Inaction

Bendjama criticized the UN Security Council’s lack of action, stating that the continuation of this invasion and violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity without any serious reaction from the Security Council encourages Israel to commit broader violations of international law and further destabilize the entire region.

Call for Accountability

The Algerian diplomat questioned when the Security Council would take responsibility for maintaining international peace and security and impose sanctions on Israel for its atrocities and violations.

Support for UNIFIL

Bendjama praised the “pivotal role” of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in maintaining regional stability. He expressed “deep concern” over Israel’s establishment of a gathering area adjacent to UNIFIL’s position in the town of Maroun al-Ras and condemned Israeli forces for firing on three UNIFIL sites, resulting in injuries to two peacekeepers.
