Algerian President Highlights Alignment of Views Between Algeria and India on Regional and Global Issues

Algiers – On Monday, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized the strong alignment of perspectives between Algeria and India regarding several current regional and international issues. Both countries have agreed to continue their joint efforts in contributing to global peace and security.

In a joint press statement with the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, following their meeting at the Presidential Palace in Algiers, President Tebboune said, “I warmly welcome the President of the friendly nation of India, who is on a state visit to Algeria. This is the first time that Algeria has received an Indian head of state, although we have previously hosted Indian Prime Ministers.” He noted that the discussions covered “intensive talks addressing bilateral cooperation and prospects for its development, as well as current regional and global issues.”

The two leaders discussed the deep historical relations between Algeria and India, with President Tebboune praising these ties. The two countries agreed on enhancing economic cooperation, encouraging investment and trade exchanges, and preparing soon for the convening of the joint committee for cooperation and the political consultation mechanism. These steps are aimed at supporting and deepening the partnership between the two nations, including fostering business relations and enriching the legal framework for cooperation through increased coordination and consultation.

President Tebboune also remarked on the “lengthy and in-depth conversation” he had with President Murmu, driven by the “exceptional and pressing regional and international circumstances.” The discussions covered a range of issues, including the situation in the Middle East, especially the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza and South Lebanon. Tebboune expressed concern over the catastrophic humanitarian consequences and the serious implications for peace and security in the Middle East and globally.

Regarding this matter, both presidents reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying coordination and consultation and reiterated their support for the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state.

On the situation in Ukraine, President Tebboune emphasized the importance of adhering to international law and upholding the goals, principles, and charter of the United Nations.

The Sahrawi issue was also addressed during the discussions, with President Tebboune highlighting the agreement between Algeria and India to closely follow the outcomes of the UN Security Council on the Western Sahara conflict. On the Sahel region, both leaders expressed their determination to continue supporting peace, security, and development efforts to help the affected countries overcome the political, security, and environmental challenges they face.

In all these matters, President Tebboune noted a strong alignment of views between Algeria and India, with both countries agreeing to continue their joint efforts to foster security and stability, both regionally and in other parts of the world facing crises that pose threats to global peace and security.

President Tebboune expressed his “joy” in meeting with the President of India and reflecting on the shared history between the two nations. He recalled India’s support for Algeria during its bid for membership in the Non-Aligned Movement at the Bandung Conference in 1955, as well as India’s support for the Algerian liberation movement by hosting the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic in New Delhi, even before Algeria declared its independence on July 5, 1962.

President Tebboune concluded by stressing that Algeria and India will “resume their consultations as they once did in the past, as two active states in the Non-Aligned Movement.”
