Algiers – The 2024 Global Parliamentary Forum, organized by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), kicked off on Monday in Washington, D.C., with the participation of two deputies from Algeria’s National People’s Assembly. The Algerian representatives highlighted their country’s efforts to diversify exports beyond hydrocarbons and promote local production.
According to a statement from the National People’s Assembly, Salim Merah and Youssef Hamidi participated alongside representatives from Algeria’s Council of the Nation in a discussion focused on parliamentary priorities. The session provided a platform for legislators from various countries to share their national strategies and policies.
Algeria’s Economic Reforms and Diversification Efforts
During the forum, Salim Merah emphasized Algeria’s ongoing initiatives to reduce dependence on hydrocarbons, encourage local industries, and safeguard citizens’ purchasing power. He stressed the importance of protecting financial reserves to ensure economic stability and sustainable growth.
The Algerian deputy also praised the role of the national parliament in legislating financial, production, and investment frameworks. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting Algeria’s economic and trade opportunities on the international stage.
Merah further advocated for a multipolar world and more equitable economic policies, reminding participants that the IMF recently ranked Algeria as the third-largest economy in Africa by the end of 2024.
Parliamentary Dialogue on Global Cooperation
The parliamentary session was chaired by Liam Byrne, a British parliamentarian and founding president of the Parliamentary Network of the World Bank and the IMF. This year’s forum is themed “Overcoming the Challenges of Multilateralism”, addressing the complexities of global cooperation in a shifting geopolitical landscape.
The National People’s Assembly of Algeria is represented at this year’s forum by Merah and Hamidi, both of whom are permanent members of the World Bank and IMF Parliamentary Network. Their participation underscores Algeria’s engagement in international efforts to foster inclusive economic growth and strengthen multilateral collaboration.
