Algiers – The High Commission for Amazigh recently published a collective work titled “Pedagogy of Teaching Amazigh for Adult Literacy and Education.” This 128-page book, contributed by a team of pedagogical experts and educational practitioners, delves into effective methods and strategies for teaching the Amazigh language to adults in literacy and continuing education programs across Algeria.
This publication gathers contributions in Arabic, Amazigh, and French, originally presented at a training seminar held in 2017 by the High Commission for Amazigh in collaboration with the National Center for Literacy and Adult Education in Biskra. The book’s introduction, written by Si El Hachemi Assad, Secretary-General of the High Commission, emphasizes the importance of fostering an educational framework specifically tailored to adult learners outside the formal school system. Assad highlights the dual goals of empowering citizens to reclaim their linguistic heritage and promoting social cohesion.
Key Topics and Educational Approaches
The book offers insights into several educational themes, with Arabic-language contributions that explore adult psychology, effective competency-based approaches, and educational assessment methods. Among the notable topics are “The Psychology of Adult Learners” by Taahar Atallah, an educator and director at the National Literacy and Adult Education Office in Bouira; “Competency-Based Approach: Theory and Practice” by Ahmed Salah Mekki, a national education inspector in Guelma; and “Educational Evaluation for Adult Learners” by Ben Jadid Boujemaa, an inspector in Saida.
French-language sections examine issues in Algeria’s adult literacy landscape, adult learning techniques, and contemporary methods of teaching Amazigh. Contributions include “Adult Literacy in Algeria and Globally” by National Literacy Office Secretary-General Hassan Slimani, “Techniques for Teaching Adults” by former Tizi Ouzou Education Director Mohand Akli Lanak, and “Competency-Based Amazigh Language Education” by Kamel Derissi, an educator in El Tarf.
The Amazigh-language sections provide perspectives on traditional and innovative literacy teaching, including topics like “Pedagogy of Written Expression” by Rashid Sahnouni, a professor and education inspector, and “Activation of a Pedagogical Portfolio”, illustrating the modern applications in teaching the written Amazigh language.
This publication represents a significant step in promoting Amazigh literacy and advancing inclusive citizenship through linguistic accessibility for Amazigh and non-Amazigh speakers alike.
