The Algiers International Book Fair, running from November 6 to 16, 2024, at the Safex Exhibition Center, has announced the participation of 1,007 exhibitors from 40 countries, with Qatar highlighted as the guest of honor. This year’s theme, “We Read to Prevail,” reflects a unique celebration of literature and coincides with the 70th anniversary of Algeria’s Liberation Revolution.
According to the event’s commissioner, Mohamed Ikreb, the fair will introduce a special youth award for first-time authors titled “My First Book,” available in Arabic, Tamazight, and French, with a prize of 500,000 Algerian dinars for each language category.
Among the 1,007 exhibitors, 290 Algerian publishers are participating, while the fair expects over 350 invited guests, including notable figures from Qatar. The event will feature various activities and meetings with authors, researchers, and creators to foster closer cultural exchange between Algeria and Qatar.
Dr. Amina Belala, a member of the organizing committee, outlined a diverse program organized around six main themes: History and Memory, Palestine, a special section dedicated to Qatar as the guest of honor, Africa, Literature, and Cultural Heritage. The Qatari theme will include panels on Qatari literature, translation, cultural sustainability, and heritage preservation, alongside discussions about the Katara Prize.
The Palestinian cause will also be highlighted through panels such as “Resistance Literature in Palestine: Pens in the Line of Fire,” “Palestine in Algerian Poetry,” “Cinema Against Zionism,” and a tribute to martyr poets from Gaza, as Dr. Belala emphasized.
