Algiers – The Algerian Minister of Tourism and Traditional Crafts, Mokhtar Dedouche, emphasized today in Algiers the importance of addressing artisans’ needs and ensuring that the traditional crafts sector plays a meaningful role in wealth creation. Speaking during the celebration of National Artisan Day, held annually on November 9, Minister Dedouche underscored this day as a significant opportunity to discuss and resolve artisans’ concerns to help drive wealth generation—a key aim of the government’s action plan under the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The Minister highlighted the crafts industry as a vital tool for employment, particularly among youth, with approximately 460,000 registered craft activities nationwide. He stressed that the traditional crafts sector contributes to economic growth beyond hydrocarbons, marking it as a crucial pillar in Algeria’s economic diversification strategy.
Minister Dedouche encouraged artisans to actively participate in the country’s development and embrace modernization, noting that they uphold the history and heritage of an ancient nation. He also congratulated artisans on National Artisan Day, viewing it as an opportunity to assess accomplishments and set goals for the future to support Algeria’s crafts and traditional industries.
In light of Algeria’s upcoming role as a guest of honor at the 28th International Traditional Crafts Exhibition, scheduled in Milan, Italy, at the end of November, the Minister urged artisans to make a strong presence at this international event. Their participation would showcase Algeria’s rich tangible and intangible heritage to the world.
The National Chamber of Traditional Crafts and Trades President, Mohamed Hichem Nait Rabah, commended Algerian artisans across the country for their continuous efforts to enhance the quality of traditional crafts while preserving national identity and Algeria’s diverse cultural heritage. Nait Rabah emphasized the craft sector’s importance in generating products, services, and job opportunities for young creatives, alongside its role in protecting national heritage.
The celebration, attended by the Minister of Vocational Training and Education, Yassine Merabi, and the Minister of Culture and Arts, Souraya Moulougi, concluded with a ceremony honoring a distinguished group of artisans, including several differently-abled artisans, for their creative contributions to Algerian crafts.
