Algiers – The CEOs of Algeria’s energy giants, Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, Rachid Hachichi and Mourad Adjal respectively, are taking part in European Hydrogen Week, which kicked off on Monday in Brussels under the theme: “The Fast Track to the Future.”
According to a statement by Sonatrach, the company’s participation aims to enhance collaboration with international partners and exchange expertise and knowledge in hydrogen technologies, contributing to energy transition and sustainable development.
The statement highlights Sonatrach’s commitment to investing in the hydrogen industry as part of its strategy to strengthen renewable energy’s role in its energy mix and reduce its carbon footprint.
Sonelgaz, in its statement, described its involvement in the event as a “strategic step in Algeria’s efforts to transition to clean energy and bolster international cooperation in renewable energy.” The company aims to reaffirm its leadership in the energy sector and showcase its ongoing renewable energy and hydrogen projects.
Minister of Energy’s Address
During the event, Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, delivered a speech via video conference. He provided a comprehensive overview of Algeria’s strategy for developing the hydrogen sector, emphasizing the country’s vast potential in this domain.
The minister outlined Algeria’s ambition to play a leading role in producing green hydrogen by leveraging its abundant renewable energy resources and strategic geographical position, positioning the nation as a pivotal supplier of clean energy to the European market.
European Hydrogen Week Highlights
The European Hydrogen Week is the premier annual event dedicated to hydrogen technology, bringing together top international stakeholders, policymakers, and industry leaders. This year’s forum runs until November 22 and features:
- Over 200 speakers and 25 panel sessions addressing key developments, technical innovations, and future trends in hydrogen energy.
- Discussions on hydrogen’s critical role in the global energy transition, challenges in decarbonizing various sectors, and its contributions to reducing carbon emissions.
Sonatrach and Sonelgaz’s active participation underscores Algeria’s commitment to advancing its renewable energy capabilities, particularly in green hydrogen, to secure a prominent role in the global clean energy landscape.
