Cairo – The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has strongly condemned the United States’ use of its veto power in the United Nations Security Council to block a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid. The resolution had been supported by 14 member states of the Council.
Aboul Gheit described the U.S. veto as a de facto endorsement of Israeli aggression, accusing Washington of giving the Israeli entity a “green light” to continue its military campaign in Gaza.
Humanitarian and Political Implications
According to Jamal Rushdi, the Secretary-General’s official spokesperson, Aboul Gheit denounced the U.S. stance as “politically and morally indefensible,” emphasizing that it enables Israel to escalate its attacks on Palestinian civilians in Gaza. These attacks, he added, involve tactics such as starvation and forced displacement, particularly in northern Gaza, as part of a broader strategy to depopulate the area.
Aboul Gheit stressed that by employing its veto, the U.S. further entrenches international inaction in addressing one of the region’s most dangerous conflicts. He accused the U.S. of emboldening Israeli occupation forces to advance the agenda of the far-right Israeli government, including plans for annexation and expanded settlement activities.
Undermining Global Trust in the UN
The spokesperson also highlighted that this marks the fourth time the U.S. has used its veto to block resolutions aimed at halting aggression in Gaza. Such actions, Aboul Gheit asserted, contribute to the Security Council’s failure to uphold its mandate of maintaining international peace and security. The repeated vetoes weaken the credibility of the UN system and erode global trust in its mechanisms.
The Arab League’s condemnation underscores growing frustration with international paralysis in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the escalation of violence in the region.
