Arab League Reaffirms Firm Rejection of Forced Displacement in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem

Cairo – The General Secretariat of the Arab League reiterated on Wednesday its categorical rejection of all forms of forced displacement targeting the residents of Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem by the Israeli occupation. It also denounced ongoing attempts to eliminate the Palestinian refugee issue through the dismantling of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

This statement was issued in conjunction with the observance of “Arab Expatriates Day” on December 4.

The Arab League emphasized the urgent need to end the prolonged suffering of Palestinian refugees, ensuring their inalienable rights, including self-determination, the right of return to their homeland, and compensation, in line with international legitimacy, particularly United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194 of 1948.

The league condemned efforts to redefine the legal status of Palestinian refugees and actions aimed at dismantling UNRWA, most recently through Israel’s decision to ban the agency’s operations. It underscored the importance of supporting UNRWA to enable it to fulfill its mandate and assume full responsibility for Palestinian refugees.

Warning Against Regional Instability

The Arab League also warned of the catastrophic consequences of escalating conflicts in the region, which could result in mass displacement and irregular migration as people flee violence, seeking safety and security.

Celebrating the Role of Arab Expatriates

On this occasion, the Arab League highlighted the positive contributions of Arab expatriates worldwide. It acknowledged their role in strengthening socio-cultural and economic ties between their host countries and countries of origin. Their contributions span various fields, including economics, investment, education, scientific research, culture, arts, sports, and humanitarian efforts.

The league also recognized the critical role of expatriates in supporting the Palestinian cause, citing their political advocacy, media awareness campaigns, financial aid, and their unified stance against Israeli aggression in Gaza and Lebanon. Additionally, the influence of Arab-American voters in recent U.S. presidential elections was noted as a testament to their political engagement.
