Details of the Security Operation and Testimony of a Detained Collaborator
Algerian security forces have successfully thwarted a plot by French intelligence aimed at leveraging extremists within Algiers to gather sensitive information.
Testimony from a Detained Operative
In a report aired on Algerian national television, a suspect from Tipaza province revealed his collaboration with French intelligence. The detainee admitted to transmitting information about extremists and following directives to infiltrate key neighborhoods in Algiers.
The operative disclosed:
- French intelligence instructed him to operate in neighborhoods such as Bab El Oued, El Magharia, Hussein Dey, and El Harrach, gathering intelligence on individuals labeled as extremists.
- After his assignment in Tipaza, he was directed to expand his activities to Algiers.
- He was ordered to discontinue using WhatsApp for communication and instead switch to the encrypted application “Wire,” with aliases such as “Real Madrid” for secure and covert exchanges.
Counterintelligence Collaboration
The suspect further revealed that he re-established contact with an Algerian intelligence officer, who advised him to continue his interactions with the French operatives. This strategy allowed Algerian security forces to unravel the full extent of the foreign intelligence plot.
Implications of the Operation
This incident underscores the ongoing vigilance of Algerian security agencies in safeguarding national sovereignty. The revelation of the covert operation highlights the lengths foreign intelligence services may go to destabilize Algeria and the critical role of domestic intelligence in countering such threats.
