The 29th Algiers International Book Salon (SILA 2026), held in the eastern suburb of the capital, has opened its doors, hosting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as its distinguished guest of honor. This annual event aims to position the book as a central space for dialogue and communication, encapsulated by the slogan “Tomorrow between the covers of a book.” SILA serves as a prominent platform for discovering new publications, authors, and literary figures, fostering a vibrant environment through various meetings, seminars, discussions, and signing sessions.
Saudi Arabia's participation is marked by a high-level cultural delegation led by its Minister of Culture, Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan Al Saud. The program showcases a range of contemporary Saudi literary and intellectual works, alongside intellectual seminars, poetry evenings, and traditional folklore presentations. This engagement is designed to enhance cultural exchange, promote the development of the publishing sector, and establish channels for communication and sustainable partnerships between Algerian and Saudi publishing houses. A dialogue seminar titled “Literary Battles” also formed part of the Saudi agenda.
The Salon underscores the enduring importance of paper books in the digital age, encouraging intellectual curiosity and supporting literary creativity. Dignitaries, including Khalida Boufdis, President of the People's National Assembly, and Azzouz Nasseri, President of the Council of the Nation, attended the opening ceremonies. Mr. Nasseri affirmed the book's role as a bridge connecting generations to the future, highlighting SILA's status as one of the largest literary and publishing events in Africa, the Arab world, and the Mediterranean. With over 1567 exhibitors and more than 285,000 titles, the Salon significantly contributes to promoting reading, supporting the book industry, and strengthening cultural diplomacy across the region.
