Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab discussed with the World Bank Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Ousmane Dione, the prospects for expanding cooperation in developing the oil, gas and petrochemical industry. The meeting took place today, Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at the "Abdelatif Rahal" International Conference Center in Algiers, in the presence of senior officials from both sides, according to a statement from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the second day of the workshop on climate finance and carbon markets. Both sides welcomed the existing level of cooperation between the hydrocarbons sector and the World Bank and its institutions, particularly following Sonatrach's signing of a memorandum of understanding with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in reducing gas flaring and methane emissions, developing green hydrogen and its derivatives, as well as petrochemicals and fertilizers.
The meeting was also an opportunity to discuss prospects for strengthening cooperation between Algeria and the World Bank, particularly in technical and financial areas, exchanging expertise, and supporting strategic projects related to the hydrocarbons sector.
In this context, the two sides reviewed the potential for expanding cooperation in developing the oil, gas and petrochemical industry, reducing emissions and cutting the carbon footprint, as well as the fertilizer industry, seawater desalination, and the manufacturing of related equipment.
