The year 2024 marked the 70th anniversary of the glorious November 1 Revolution, celebrated under the theme “Glorious November: Loyalty and Renewal”. This milestone emphasized the enduring reverence for the sacrifices and messages of Algeria’s martyrs while reaffirming the nation’s commitment to its historical memory as a guiding light for building a strong and triumphant Algeria.

Highlights of the 70th Anniversary

A grand military parade, presided over by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, was a central feature of the celebrations. The event was attended by national leaders and international guests from friendly and allied nations. The parade showcased the professionalism and strength of the People’s National Army, the descendant of the National Liberation Army, which once vanquished colonial forces and raised the Algerian flag high.

President Tebboune emphasized the symbolic importance of this military display, describing it as a tribute to the revolution’s martyrs and a reflection of the unbreakable bond between the people and their armed forces. He highlighted that the victorious November 1 Revolution remains an inspiration for Algeria’s ongoing triumphs, achieved through the dedication of its loyal sons and daughters.

Year-Long Commemoration

The 70th anniversary celebrations carried profound symbolic significance, reflecting Algeria’s commitment to preserving its identity and national memory. These efforts reinforced societal cohesion, deepened historical awareness, and strengthened allegiance to the nation’s values and symbols.

To commemorate this milestone, the Ministry of Mujahideen and Rights Holders designed a comprehensive program extending through November 1, 2025. The program, involving 12 ministerial sectors, includes:

  • Cultural and Historical Activities: These include the epic performance “The Kiss of the Free”, the historical play “Lest We Forget”, and the grand historical show “Spirit of Algeria”.
  • Scientific and Academic Initiatives: National and international conferences, study days, and periodic seminars aim to spread historical knowledge and instill historical awareness in future generations.
  • Tributes and Competitions: Recognition of mujahideen (freedom fighters), widows of martyrs, and friends of the Algerian Revolution, alongside history-focused competitions for youth and students in collaboration with education and sports sectors.

Advancing Memory Preservation through Digitization

In line with Algeria’s modernization efforts, 2024 saw significant strides in the digitization of historical memory. This initiative aims to facilitate the transmission of Algeria’s rich history to younger generations through modern technologies.

Key achievements include:

  • Launch of the Digital Historical Library: A repository of indexed books, academic works, memoirs, and dissertations covering Algeria’s history from 1830 to 1962.
  • Preservation of Living Testimonies: Recordings of firsthand accounts from mujahideen and mujahidat at central and local levels.
  • Digitization of Historical Films and Documentaries: Ensuring the accessibility of audiovisual records of Algeria’s revolutionary history.

Through these efforts, Algeria reaffirms its unwavering commitment to preserving the legacy of the Revolution and passing it on to future generations.
