Parliamentarians Praise the President’s Directives During the Government-Walis Meeting

Algeria – Members of Parliament from both chambers commended the directives given by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during the opening session of the Government-Walis Meeting held on December 24 and 25. The outcomes of the meeting were seen as pillars to enhance the activities of local authorities and promote decentralized governance.

In this context, Vice President of the People’s National Assembly, Zouheir Nasri, emphasized that the timing of this meeting at the beginning of the President’s new term was significant. It outlined a roadmap for the coming phase, particularly for local authorities. He highlighted that the enactment of the new municipality and province laws would focus on wealth creation and local investments, granting municipal councils greater management autonomy.

Zakaria Belkhir, an MP from the Movement of Society for Peace party, described the meeting as a vital step in discussing developmental files and evaluating progress under the new laws, especially concerning investment and forward-looking visions for local authorities. He also applauded the expansion of municipal council powers and the digitization efforts, noting their potential to positively impact local governance and decentralization.

Similarly, independent MP Lahcen Labid regarded the meeting as a breakthrough, producing significant outcomes that reinforce the performance of local authorities. He noted the President’s emphasis on addressing shortcomings and implementing major projects, along with expanding elected officials’ powers to enable municipalities to establish broader partnerships for investment.

Kamale Ben Khlouf, an MP from the National Building Movement, highlighted the key message of the meeting: fostering continuous dialogue between the executive branch and local administrations. He pointed out that workshops during the event consolidated critical issues, stressing that broadening discussions could lead to more practical and executable solutions.

From the Council of the Nation, Saad Arous, head of the Presidential Third Bloc, underlined the President’s focus on aligning municipal and provincial laws with the nation’s broad investment ambitions. He asserted that Algeria is on a trajectory to bolster investment across all sectors, making the expansion of officials’ powers an essential move, especially as they are the closest representatives to the citizens.

Fouad Sebouta, another member of the Council of the Nation, reaffirmed President Tebboune’s commitment to dialogue and consultation as key strategies to advance development, particularly at the local level. He stated that the meeting’s outcomes provide a fresh boost to local development efforts, supported by substantial budget allocations for this purpose.
