Morocco: Sentencing of Anti-Normalization Activists Aims to Criminalize Support for Palestine

Rabat – Moroccan human rights organizations have condemned the recent sentencing of 13 anti-normalization activists, labeling the rulings as “politically motivated” efforts by authorities to criminalize support for the Palestinian cause and its resistance.

The Moroccan Front for Palestine Support and Anti-Normalization expressed in a statement its strong condemnation of these “unjust” and “political” rulings against its activists. The group views these actions as part of an attempt to suppress movements exposing acts of genocide by Israeli ships docking in Moroccan ports and opposing normalization with the Zionist occupation.

Determination to Resist Normalization

The statement affirmed that these “fabricated and unjust rulings” will not deter the Front from continuing its struggle to end Moroccan normalization with the criminal Zionist entity. It also expressed full solidarity with the activists and commended the legal defense team for exposing the retaliatory motives behind the charges.

The Front also announced plans to hold a press conference in Rabat to shed light on the trials, repression of its activities, and the broader implications of the rulings.

Broader Condemnation from Human Rights Groups

The Moroccan Observatory for Anti-Normalization also denounced the trials as “unjust,” criticizing the selective application of justice. It highlighted the lack of legal action against Moroccan figures openly collaborating with the Zionist regime despite evidence and complaints filed by civil organizations.

The Observatory expressed unwavering solidarity with the activists, whom it described as the “heartbeat of the Moroccan people,” and called for an end to the prosecution of those opposing normalization and standing against the atrocities committed by the Zionist regime in Gaza.

Context of the Sentencing

The Moroccan League for Advocacy on National Issues, another component of the Front, had previously described the ruling as “arbitrary and unjust.” It noted that this trial is part of a broader trend of targeting activists protesting against normalization. The League urged authorities to halt the harassment of anti-normalization activists and address the root cause of these protests—continued Moroccan normalization with the Zionist entity.

The case involved nine court sessions for the trial of 13 activists arrested following a peaceful protest in Slaa in November 2023. The protest was directed at a foreign retail chain accused of supporting the Zionist occupation’s genocidal war in Gaza. The court sentenced each activist to six months of suspended imprisonment and a 2000 dirham fine (~€190) for “participation in an unauthorized protest” and “incitement to demonstrate.”
