President Tebboune Reaffirms Commitment to Preserving Algeria’s National Memory

Algiers – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reiterated on Sunday his steadfast dedication to safeguarding Algeria’s national memory and honoring the legacy of the nation’s freedom fighters and martyrs from the resistance and the War of Independence.

Honoring Algeria’s Proud History

Addressing the nation from the Parliament at the Palace of Nations, Tebboune reflected deeply on Algeria’s rich history, stating:
“I consider myself the son of a martyr, the son of Bou Baghla, Sheikh Amoud, Colonel Amirouche, Mostefa Ben Boulaïd, Colonel Lotfi, and all the martyrs of Algeria. Our dignity and the honor of our ancestors must be preserved.”

He emphasized that the nation’s memory should not be treated lightly, recalling the atrocities of colonialism, including massacres in places such as Zaatcha and Laghouat, the deaths of 45,000 people on May 8, 1945, and the devastation caused by nuclear testing in southern Algeria.

A Call for Historical Accountability

Tebboune addressed the former colonial power, declaring:
“I do not ask for monetary compensation, but rather acknowledgment of the crimes committed.”
He stressed the lasting impact of colonial policies, including the destruction of education and agriculture, and the enduring harm from nuclear experiments. He urged the former colonizer to take responsibility for cleaning up the environmental and health damages left behind.

Commitment to the Legacy of the Martyrs

The President underscored the inalienable rights of Algerians to demand recognition of historical injustices. He warned against those who dismiss the principles of the martyrs and resistance fighters, asserting that their sacrifices form the foundation of Algeria’s national identity.

Gratitude for Algeria’s Founders

Tebboune expressed gratitude to the leaders who guided Algeria post-independence, highlighting their dedication to upholding the values of the November 1, 1954 Revolution and establishing a social state.

Moving Forward with Unity

The President concluded by reaffirming his commitment to advancing Algeria’s development, emphasizing the trust and collective mobilization of Algerians in building a prosperous and united nation.
