Algiers – Nawara Saadia Jaafar, a member of the Algerian Council of the Nation and the Coalition of Arab Women Parliamentarians to Combat Violence Against Women, participated remotely in a conference titled “Palestinian Female Prisoners in Occupation Prisons: A Narrative of Genocide,” the Council announced on Sunday.
A Global Forum for Justice
The event, held on Saturday via a virtual platform, was organized by the General Union of Palestinian Women in partnership with the Palestinian NGO Forum to Combat Violence Against Women. It brought together parliamentarians, politicians, lawyers, and experts in international law to discuss the dire conditions of Palestinian women prisoners under Israeli occupation.
Participants highlighted the “tragic plight” of Palestinian female prisoners and explored mechanisms for solidarity amid ongoing crimes of genocide, forced displacement, torture, and arbitrary arrests targeting Palestinians in Gaza and other occupied territories.
Algeria’s Firm Support for Palestine
In her address, Senator Jaafar condemned the international community’s silence on what she termed as “systematic human rights violations and crimes against humanity.” She stated:
“The brutality of the Zionist occupation is fueled by its supporters and global inaction, despite the countless reports documenting its crimes.”
She denounced the occupation’s practices in Gaza and the occupied territories as acts of “genocide and ethnic cleansing that defy international humanitarian law by deliberately targeting civilians, hospitals, medical staff, and journalists.”
Jaafar reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, advocating for their legitimate right to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. She also emphasized Algeria’s efforts to bring attention to the plight of Palestinian female prisoners, including submitting a comprehensive dossier to the UN Security Council.
Calls for Action
The conference concluded with participants urging:
- Expanding international legal accountability.
- Submitting official complaints to UN bodies regarding the treatment of Palestinian women prisoners.
- Launching a global campaign to protect them and provide psychological support for those released.
