Sonarem Achieves $200 Million in Exports in 2024

Algiers – The state-owned mining company, Sonarem, reported $200 million in exports for 2024, with phosphate contributing over $193 million, according to CEO Belkacem Soltani.

Achievements and Strategic Goals

The company nearly met all its targets for the year, including launching several previously planned projects. These outcomes reflect the strategy set by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aiming to:

  • Reduce reliance on mineral imports.
  • Satisfy domestic demand.
  • Export surplus to boost non-hydrocarbon revenues.

New Projects for 2025

Key upcoming initiatives include:

  • Calcium Carbonate Plant: Located in Bounouara, Khroub (Constantine), the plant will create direct jobs and enhance product quality.
  • Human Capital Development: A focus on recruiting specialized talent and training staff to leverage modern technologies.
  • Exploration Expansion: Utilizing the 2021 mineral program to uncover high-value resources, such as feldspar, lithium, uranium, and rare stones.

Gold Mining Revival

Sonarem plans to revive the Tiraq and Amesmessa gold mines in Tamanrasset, which have been dormant for over a decade. Traditional gold mining licenses have already been issued to 46 companies in 2024, with national production since 2022 reaching over 351 kg.

Large-Scale Mining Projects

Progress is advancing on significant mining ventures, including:

  • Gara Djebilet iron mine (Tindouf).
  • Integrated phosphate mine (Tebessa).
  • Zinc and lead mine at Tala Hamza, Oued Amizour (Bejaia).

Sonarem has pledged to mobilize all necessary resources to complete these projects swiftly, in line with presidential directives emphasizing their critical economic impact.
