Algeria Reiterates Rejection of Military Intervention in African Crises

Algiers – Algeria has reaffirmed its opposition to military interventions as a means of resolving crises in the Sahel and Sahara regions. Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf emphasized that political solutions are fundamental to resolving conflicts on the African continent.

Speaking at a press conference reviewing Algeria’s diplomatic achievements in 2024, Minister Attaf stated, “Political and diplomatic solutions have historically proven to be the cornerstone for resolving conflicts in Africa.” He highlighted that the current tensions in the Sahel and Sahara are not unprecedented, given the region’s history of polarization.

Political Solutions for Libya

Addressing the Libyan crisis, Minister Attaf noted that while there was a consensus on organizing elections as a pathway to resolve disputes, disagreements arose over who should oversee and hold the necessary authority for the elections. He mentioned that Algeria’s recent discussions with the interim UN envoy to Libya focused on these issues.

The minister also stressed that foreign interventions in Libya, combined with local and geopolitical factors, have complicated the crisis, making it resistant to conventional solutions.

Strengthening Africa’s Global Presence

Minister Attaf underscored the importance of a robust African Union Commission to address the continent’s challenges effectively. He pointed to Africa’s participation in the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as a full member for the first time, but expressed disappointment at the lack of clear demands from the continent.

“Africa needs to present precise and well-prepared positions, as was evident during our G20 participation and in discussions about securing permanent and non-permanent seats for Africa in the United Nations Security Council,” he added.

Attaf also discussed Algeria’s candidacy for the position of Vice President of the African Union Commission, noting that preparatory work is underway to meet all necessary conditions.

Clear Stance on Syria

Turning to Syria, Minister Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s principled stance based on three pillars: inclusivity among all Syrians in shaping the country’s future, respect for Syria’s territorial integrity, and the role of the United Nations as the ideal framework for facilitating dialogue among Syrian factions.
