Gaza – The Civil Defense in Gaza announced today that heavy rainfall over the past two days has inundated more than 1,500 tents housing displaced individuals across several areas of the Gaza Strip. This comes amidst a harsh weather front that has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis.

According to the Civil Defense media office, rescue teams reported that hundreds of tents were flooded with water levels exceeding 30 cm, causing severe hypothermia among many displaced residents. The floods have also damaged personal belongings and rendered the shelters uninhabitable.

Impact Across Gaza Strip

The affected shelters are scattered across various provinces:

  • Gaza City:
    • 242 tents in the camps set up at Al-Yarmouk Stadium and Gaza Municipality Park.
    • 185 tents at the Saraya Complex and 70 at Shuja’iyya Parking Lot.
  • Rafah:
    • 170 tents submerged in areas such as Al-Bahr Street and Mawasi Rafah.
  • Khan Younis:
    • More than 665 tents flooded in areas near Al-Aqsa University and Al-Amal neighborhood pond.
  • Central Province:
    • 210 tents impacted in regions west of Deir Al-Balah, around the pond, and Wadi Al-Salqa.

Dire Living Conditions

The Civil Defense highlighted that displaced families are enduring their second winter under harsh conditions, lacking basic necessities and heating systems. Alarmingly, over 81% of the tents have deteriorated to the point of being unusable, leaving families exposed to the elements.

The situation underscores the urgent need for international assistance to provide adequate shelter and humanitarian aid to the displaced population in Gaza.
