Morocco marked the end of 2024 with mass protests in several cities on Tuesday, denouncing the government’s normalization of ties with Israel. These protests, labeled as acts of betrayal against the Palestinian cause, spotlighted the growing divide between the Moroccan populace and its leadership.
Nationwide Demonstrations
In cities such as Tangier, public gatherings evolved into large-scale demonstrations organized by the Moroccan Committee for Supporting National Causes. Protesters voiced their anger over what they called an “unforgivable betrayal” by the Moroccan government, which has openly aligned with Israel.
Carrying Palestinian flags and chanting slogans against the normalization of ties, demonstrators called for an immediate reversal of these policies, labeling normalization as a “stain of shame” in Morocco’s history. They also condemned the government’s silence regarding the continued atrocities committed by Israel since October 2023.
Disconnect Between the People and the Government
The Moroccan Committee for Supporting National Causes criticized the government, stating, “The regime has fully embraced normalization, disregarding the collective will of its people, who oppose any collaboration with the occupiers.”
The committee added, “This policy of normalization sacrifices the Palestinian cause at the altar of political and economic interests with Israel. How can a government that claims to represent its people stand alongside those who kill children, destroy homes, and seize land?”
Calls for Boycotts and Economic Action
Protesters did not stop at verbal denunciations. They called for an economic boycott of Israeli products and companies that support the occupation. Protesters encouraged citizens to abstain from participating in any activities that benefit the Israeli regime.
Repression of Anti-Normalization Activists
While the protests demonstrated widespread public opposition, the Moroccan government has reportedly clamped down on anti-normalization voices. The Moroccan Committee for Supporting Palestine and Opposing Normalization reported that 13 activists from its ranks were sentenced in late 2024.
The organization described these trials as politically motivated, stating that charges were based on legal grounds unrelated to the activists’ peaceful protest activities. “These unjust sentences underscore the regime’s ongoing efforts to suppress free voices standing for Palestinian solidarity,” the committee declared.
A Clear Message to the Authorities
The demonstrations in Tangier and beyond served as a reminder that the Moroccan government’s policies on normalization are at odds with public sentiment. Protesters emphasized that the people’s solidarity lies firmly with Palestinians, in defiance of the state’s normalization efforts.
