Celebrating the Amazigh New Year 2975: Plans to Establish Regional Branches of the High Commission for Amazighity

Timimoun – Si El Hachemi Assad, Secretary-General of the High Commission for Amazighity (HCA), announced on Friday in Timimoun that discussions are underway to create regional branches of the HCA across the country.

Speaking at a press conference held at the headquarters of the Provincial People’s Assembly after the grand parade marking the official national celebration of the Amazigh New Year (2975) and the President’s Prize for Amazigh Literature and Language, Assad highlighted the initiative. He stated that the aim is to expand the HCA’s reach based on its pioneering efforts to promote the Amazigh language in its various dialects, thereby enhancing its activities in all provinces and during national cultural events.

Expanding Research and Digital Platforms

Assad also emphasized the HCA’s efforts to support scientific research in the Amazigh language and culture, noting the establishment of five Amazigh language and literature institutes in the provinces of Bouira, Tizi Ouzou, Tamanrasset, Béjaïa, and Batna. These institutes are supported by research teams led by experts dedicated to collecting linguistic data and documenting dialectal variations.

Regarding digitalization, Assad revealed that the HCA has launched three digital platforms: one for press content, another for books, and a third dedicated to the President’s Prize for Amazigh Literature and Language.

Cultural Workshops and Local Heritage

Assad explained that the workshops held in Timimoun were carefully chosen to highlight the region’s agricultural, cultural, and tourism potential. He noted that the workshops aimed to support Timimoun’s agricultural transformation, especially given that the Amazigh New Year, or Yennayer, is closely linked to the agricultural calendar.

A notable workshop focused on clay decoration and engraving was hosted at the Algerian Center for Earthen Cultural Heritage. Assad emphasized that this workshop not only promotes local architecture but also positions Timimoun as an attractive destination for filmmakers seeking authentic cultural backdrops.

New Partnerships and Twinning Programs

Assad announced plans for a twinning program between the municipality of Timimoun and Aqbou in Béjaïa, fostering collaboration between local associations from both regions under the supervision of the National Observatory for Civil Society. He hinted at the possibility of expanding similar initiatives to other provinces.

Economic Support for Artisans

The newly inaugurated “Yennayer Market” in Timimoun will remain open for a week, providing artisans with opportunities to showcase and sell their products in coordination with relevant authorities. Assad reiterated that the HCA will continue to support craftsmen and creators.

Rich Cultural Program and Official Celebrations

Timimoun was chosen to host the national Yennayer celebrations due to its rich cultural and historical heritage. The event’s program includes a study day on Algeria’s national identity, with participation from prominent national experts, as well as an academic conference on the historical and civilizational significance of Yennayer and the agricultural calendar.

The festivities will conclude with the awarding of the President’s Prize for Amazigh Literature and Language in its fifth edition, alongside the unveiling of a commemorative postage stamp marking this significant celebration.
