Oran – On Friday, art enthusiasts gathered at the Abdelkader Alloula Regional Theater in Oran to witness the public performance of the play “Resistance” (Al-Sumoud), a theatrical work that revisits key milestones of Algeria’s triumphant Liberation Revolution. The production highlights the December 11, 1960 demonstrations against French colonialism and the historic “Group of Six” who spearheaded the November 1, 1954 revolution.
Produced by the artistic division of the Algerian Red Crescent in Oran, and written and directed by Hassain Sidi Mohamed, “Resistance” commemorates pivotal events in Algeria’s struggle for independence. It specifically sheds light on the December 11, 1960 protests—one of the most critical moments of the liberation movement—and honors the “Group of Six” who launched the November 1954 uprising against one of the 20th century’s most oppressive colonial regimes.
A Powerful Theatrical Journey
The play unfolds in six acts, exploring various stages of the Algerian people’s struggle, the milestones of the liberation revolution, and the brutal massacres committed by French colonial forces, including the atrocities of May 8, 1945, which claimed the lives of thousands of martyrs.
Running for 1 hour and 20 minutes, the production features nine actors, with dramatic treatment by Raïs Ali Houria. According to the director, who also heads the artistic division of the Algerian Red Crescent in Oran, the play is a vivid portrayal of Algeria’s enduring fight for freedom.
Humanitarian Context and Nationwide Tour
“Resistance” was performed as part of a national humanitarian campaign initiated by the Algerian Red Crescent to collect donations in support of Palestinians in Gaza, who are enduring harsh conditions. The play will be promoted through a tour across various provinces, according to the organizers.
Director’s Acclaimed Portfolio
This is not the first significant work by the artistic division of the Algerian Red Crescent in Oran. Previously, they produced the play “Over a Hundred Years,” also written and directed by Hassain Sidi Mohamed, a veteran playwright with a portfolio of 13 theatrical works, including “Daïha Daïha” and “The Time Has Come.”
