African Energy Summit Kicks Off in Tanzania with Algeria Represented by Minister Mohamed Arkab

Algiers – On Tuesday, the African Heads of State Energy Summit commenced in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with Algeria represented by the Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, acting on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The summit, held under the theme “Lighting Africa: The Transformative Power of Mission 300,” is organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank, in collaboration with the African Union. It follows preparatory ministerial workshops and sessions held on Monday.

The central goal of the summit is to advance the “Mission 300” initiative, which aims to bring energy access to 300 million Africans by 2030, addressing the severe energy crisis that currently affects approximately 600 million people across the continent.

Key Objectives and Discussions

The summit brings together African heads of state and government, regional and international financial institutions, private sector leaders, energy experts, civil society organizations, and academic representatives. Discussions focus on strategies to ensure secure, reliable energy access and promote a comprehensive and sustainable energy transition across Africa.

The summit will conclude with the adoption of the “Dar es Salaam Energy Declaration,” in which African leaders will pledge to expand energy access, enhance renewable energy adoption, and encourage private sector investment. Additionally, national strategies will be presented to support regional electricity grid integration and the development of solar energy and microgrid networks to deliver energy to remote and underserved areas effectively and sustainably.

Algeria’s Role: A Leader in Energy Solutions for Africa

During Monday’s preparatory session, titled “Policies and Reforms for Transforming Africa’s Energy Sector,” Mr. Arkab presented Algeria’s ambitious energy vision and its historic leadership as a key energy producer. He emphasized Algeria’s efforts to promote sustainable development across Africa through electricity generation projects, enhanced electrical connectivity, and significant investments in solar energy and green hydrogen production.

Algeria’s participation in the summit aims to highlight its innovative energy solutions that contribute to the continent’s goal of clean and affordable energy access. The role of major Algerian companies like Sonatrach and Sonelgaz was underscored as pivotal in supporting African nations to modernize their energy systems. Additionally, Algeria’s commitment to training African professionals in specialized energy institutes reflects its dedication to strengthening regional capacity.

Algeria’s involvement in the summit also demonstrates its strong commitment to combating energy poverty, fostering regional and international partnerships, and providing advanced energy solutions to meet the needs of African nations. This aligns with the broader objectives of sustainable development as outlined by Algeria’s Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies.
