UN Secretary-General Stresses Two-State Solution as the Only Path to Peace in the Middle East

Addis Ababa – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated that lasting peace in the Middle East can only be achieved through a two-state solution, ensuring the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

During a press conference held on Saturday in Addis Ababa on the sidelines of his participation in the African Union Summit, Guterres stated that while the UN does not have sufficient authority to halt fighting in Gaza, he emphasized the importance of serious action toward achieving the two-state solution.

He added that the UN is exerting all possible efforts to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at securing a ceasefire, stressing the necessity of successful negotiations in the coming stages.

In commenting on the situation in Gaza, Guterres noted that the suffering of the Palestinian people would become unbearable if the conflict were to continue. He described it as unreasonable to forcibly displace millions of Palestinians from their lands.

Guterres affirmed that evicting these Palestinians from the territories they have lived in for generations would be unacceptable unless their rights to their homeland are fully recognized and respected.
