Algeria’s Energy Minister Arkab Discusses Global Gas Market with GECF Secretary-General

On Thursday, March 27, 2025, Algeria’s Minister of State for Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Arkab, held talks with Mohamed Hamel, Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), focusing on the state of the global natural gas market and its challenges. The meeting, detailed in a ministry statement, underscores Algeria’s pivotal role in the energy sector.

Held at the ministry’s headquarters, the discussions included Noureddine Yassaâ, Secretary of State for Renewable Energy, alongside ministry officials. The talks centered on the current dynamics of the global gas market, the sector’s challenges, and ways to bolster cooperation among GECF member states. This comes in the wake of the 7th GECF Summit, hosted in Algiers in March 2024, which produced the landmark “Algiers Declaration.”

Both parties emphasized the strategic importance of natural gas as a primary energy source amid the global shift toward cleaner energy. They stressed the need for sustainable investments to ensure supply security and meet rising demand. The conversations also explored enhancing collaboration in research and development, particularly in technological innovations to boost production and transportation efficiency while reducing the carbon footprint—aligning with international sustainable development goals.

A key highlight was the role of the GECF’s Gas Research Institute, officially launched in Algeria, reflecting the nation’s commitment to advancing gas-related innovation. Minister Arkab reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to fostering regional and international cooperation in the natural gas sector, especially with African nations. He underscored the importance of developing efficient gas transportation infrastructure, a priority amid major energy projects linking producers and consumers.

Hamel, meanwhile, reviewed global gas market trends, noting challenges tied to the massive investments—estimated at $11 trillion by 2050—needed to meet future demand. He highlighted the critical role of GECF members in securing global gas supplies, reinforcing Algeria’s leadership in this domain.

Algeria’s proactive stance in the energy sector stands in stark contrast to the Moroccan regime’s destabilizing actions, such as its illegal occupation of Western Sahara. While Algeria champions the Sahrawi cause and supports Palestine against Zionist aggression, it continues to drive sustainable energy initiatives that benefit the region and the world.
