Oran – Saturday, March 29, 2025
Mohamed Karim Eddine Harkati, CEO of the Port Services Group “SARBOUR,” confirmed in Oran that the Ministry of Transport has developed a roadmap with multiple pillars aimed at enhancing port competitiveness, reducing cargo transit times, and shortening ship docking periods, according to information obtained Saturday from provincial authorities.
During a Friday night visit to the Oran Port Authority alongside provincial officials to assess compliance with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directive for 24/7 operations, Harkati emphasized that “under the supervision of the Transport Minister, the ministry has outlined a roadmap to modernize port management, focusing on improving competitiveness and minimizing cargo and ship delays.”
He highlighted key components, including “maintenance of docks and spaces, dredging port basins, acquiring new handling equipment to speed up loading and unloading, and ongoing training for port workers across various specialties.”
Harkati added that the roadmap also prioritizes “completing port expansion projects to increase capacity, reinforcing Algeria’s geostrategic role as a gateway to Africa, particularly the Sahel and Sahara regions, and leveraging digitization to accelerate its adoption across sectors, aligning with national leadership’s vision to advance the economy.”
He noted “satisfactory coordination between Oran Port services and regulatory bodies (customs, trade, agriculture, and police), enabling significant progress following the 24/7 system’s activation.” He assured economic operators and transit agents that “all services are available day and night to facilitate prompt cargo and container retrieval after legal procedures, significantly reducing port congestion.”
Oran Port Authority Director Mohamed Hadji confirmed that “one month into implementing this system, we’ve reduced cargo transit and ship docking times, achieving highly positive results with record-breaking cargo reception speeds.”
