Six Algerian short films have been selected to participate in the continental short film competition organized by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) as part of the “CANEX 2025” event, according to a statement from the Ministry of Culture and Arts. The selected films will be featured in the final stage of the “CANEX Shorts” competition during the third edition of the African Trade Fair for Intra-African Trade (IATF 2025), which will take place in Algeria.
The competition will showcase 30 short films from various African countries, including six from Algeria. Three Algerian films have been selected in the documentary category: “Tipaza” by director Ahmed Barmadan, “The Spark” by Karim Tamimount, and “The Old City” by Tarej Salah El-Din Sami. In the short narrative film category, “Unstoppable” by director Ahmed Ahmed was selected, while in the animation category, two films were chosen: “Olivia” by Chouki Boukef and “Harmonica” by Mohamed Arabi Bourourou.
Promotional trailers for the selected films will be presented during a special session on September 7 at the Algiers Exhibition Center (Safex), followed by the announcement of winners and award ceremonies. The Ministry of Culture and Arts supports various stages of the exhibition as part of its ongoing efforts to promote creative production and strengthen Algeria’s presence in the African cultural scene. The fourth edition of the African Intra-African Trade Fair will take place from September 4 to 10, 2025, under the theme “Gateway to New Opportunities,” and is considered the largest trade and investment platform in Africa.
