Algeria: Support for Western Sahara a ‘Civilisational Principle’ Rooted in National History

BOUMERDES, Algeria – The Speaker of Algeria’s Council of the Nation, Azouz Nasri, has forcefully reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to the Sahrawi cause, describing it not merely as a political position but as a “civilisational principle” deeply embedded in the nation’s foreign policy.

Speaking on Wednesday, Nasri emphasized that this steadfast support is directly inspired by Algeria’s own historic struggle for independence. He drew a direct line from the nation’s foundational revolutionary experience, which began on November 1, 1954, to its current-day advocacy for the right to self-determination for the people of Western Sahara.

This stance underscores a core tenet of Algerian diplomacy: the unconditional championing of decolonization and the rights of peoples to decide their own destiny, as enshrined in international law. Nasri’s statement serves as a powerful reminder that for Algeria, this issue transcends shifting geopolitical interests and remains a matter of fundamental principle, true to its anti-colonial heritage and its revolutionary legacy.
