Algeria’s Natural Gas Output Rises 5% in June 2025 Despite Export Slowdown

Algeria recorded a 5% increase in natural gas production in June 2025, adding 390 million cubic meters compared to the same month last year. Total output reached 8.20 billion cubic meters (9.65 billion cubic feet per day), up from 7.81 billion cubic meters in June 2024, according to figures from the specialized energy platform Atqya.

This rebound follows a slight dip in May, at a time when Algerian authorities are actively expanding exploration and drilling programs to strengthen the country’s gas reserves and maintain its role as a key global energy supplier.

Monthly Performance

On a month-to-month basis, June production rose by 340 million cubic meters compared to May’s 7.86 billion cubic meters. Earlier data from JODI had shown that May’s output dropped by 200 million cubic meters year-on-year.

January 2025 remains the highest monthly production level since March 2023, with output of 9.75 billion cubic meters, although still below the 13.17 billion cubic meters recorded in March 2023.

Domestic Demand

Domestic gas consumption held steady for the second consecutive month at 1.6 billion cubic meters, mainly for heating and electricity generation. Natural gas continues to dominate Algeria’s energy mix, accounting for 98.7% of power generation in 2024, according to the Clean Energy Research Center Ember.

Exports Under Pressure

Despite higher production, gas exports declined in June to 3.95 billion cubic meters (4.65 billion cubic feet per day), down 230 million cubic meters compared with June 2024. Month-on-month, exports also fell by 110 million cubic meters compared to May’s 4.06 billion cubic meters.

The decline was largely driven by weaker liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, which totaled 807,000 tons in June, compared with more than 1 million tons in the same month last year.

Pipeline Gas vs. LNG

In contrast, pipeline gas exports showed growth, reaching 2.94 billion cubic meters in June, up from 2.86 billion cubic meters a year earlier—an increase of 80 million cubic meters compared with May.

However, LNG exports posted an overall drop for the period January–July 2025, totaling 5.6 million tons, down from 6.95 million tons during the same period in 2024.
