Major Chinese Project for Solar Glass Production in Algeria

Algiers – On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Nourredine Yassaa, Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, and Karima Bekir-Tafer, Secretary of State for Mines, both under the Ministry of Energy, received a delegation from the Chinese company Kibing Group, led by Eric Wong Quan, Deputy General Manager, at the ministry’s headquarters.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy, the Chinese delegation presented a proposed investment project named the “Algeria Solar Glass Project.” The project includes establishing a factory for producing solar glass with an annual capacity of 1.53 million tons, alongside a unit for processing and valorizing high-purity silica sand with a capacity of 1.08 million tons annually.

During the presentation, the Chinese delegation emphasized that the project is expected to create 3,000 direct jobs and achieve a local integration rate of 90%.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review the project’s potential in valorizing local natural resources, particularly silica sand, and establishing an integrated manufacturing chain in the solar energy sector. This would strengthen Algeria’s position as a regional hub for renewable energy in the Middle East and North Africa.

Yassaa highlighted Algeria’s commitment to fostering fruitful partnerships with leading international companies, noting that the Algerian market offers promising investment opportunities in hydrocarbons, clean energy, and mining. He emphasized that recent deep reforms in the investment climate provide necessary guarantees for investors, aligning with Algeria’s focus on developing major strategic projects in exploration, production, and industrial transformation. These efforts support the country’s energy transition priorities and economic diversification.

In this context, Bekir-Tafer outlined the procedures and mechanisms in place for valorizing national mining resources within the framework of current legislation.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to continue consultations to explore ways to translate this shared vision into tangible projects and partnerships that support the development of the solar glass industry and advance Algeria’s energy transition.

To this end, specialized working meetings involving relevant sector institutions will be organized in the coming days to study the project’s feasibility and implementation in accordance with national standards and requirements.
