Ministry of Health Issues Warning on Fireworks Dangers Ahead of Mawlid Celebration

Algiers – On Monday, September 1, 2025, the Ministry of Health reiterated its call for caution and vigilance regarding the use of fireworks and pyrotechnics of all kinds as the celebration of the Mawlid (Prophet’s Birthday) approaches, according to a statement reported by Sabaq Press.

The ministry emphasized that these materials pose a real threat to public health, potentially turning joyful occasions into tragedies. It highlighted that fireworks can cause serious fires and contribute to “noise pollution” from loud explosions, which disrupts individuals’ well-being, particularly affecting the elderly, the sick, pregnant women, and children. The ministry warned that loud noises may damage hearing and increase anxiety and discomfort.

The statement noted that direct handling of fireworks exposes individuals to severe injuries, which can also affect others. For instance, an explosion in the hand could lead to the loss of fingers, and eye injuries may result in blindness, potentially preventing individuals from leading a normal life or pursuing certain professions.

Among the most severe consequences, the ministry pointed out, are second- and third-degree burns, often affecting fingers, arms, eyes, and the face, causing disfigurements that are difficult to treat and can drastically alter victims’ lives. The eyes are particularly vulnerable, with fireworks explosions potentially causing complex visual injuries such as erosions, ulcers, burns, and even eyeball rupture, leading to severe complications, including permanent blindness.

The Ministry of Health concluded its statement by offering advice for handling burns, recommending the “Rule of 15”: pour lukewarm water at 15°C over the burn for 15 minutes from a distance of 15 cm. This step helps reduce damage to skin tissue. The ministry stressed the importance of immediately seeking the nearest emergency service in case of complications.

It also urged citizens to celebrate the Mawlid in a safe and peaceful manner, free from risks that threaten health and lives.
