Minister of Culture Receives Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization

Algiers – On Wednesday evening, September 3, 2025, the Minister of Culture and Arts, Zouhir Ballou, received the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, to discuss ways and prospects for enhancing cooperation between Algeria and the UN organization in the field of protecting authors’ rights and related rights, according to a statement from the ministry reported by *aps.dz*. The statement noted that the meeting, which aligns with the ministry’s strategy to promote authors’ rights and related rights and strengthen international partnerships in this area, provided an opportunity to exchange views on enhancing cooperation between Algeria and WIPO. Discussions also focused on developing partnership programs to support creators and stakeholders in the cultural and artistic sectors. Following the meeting, the guest visited an exhibition dedicated to Algerian women’s traditional attire, where he learned about the richness and diversity of this authentic heritage and its reflection of creativity rooted in national identity, as per the same source. In his remarks during the event, Minister Ballou highlighted “Algeria’s support, under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, for entrepreneurship, innovation, and creativity.” He emphasized that the President’s vision “is based on empowering creators and providing an environment that transforms ideas and inventions into tangible projects that create real value for the country and the region.” For his part, WIPO Director General Daren Tang praised “the significant efforts made by Algeria in protecting intellectual property and developing creative industries,” noting that the Algerian experience serves as “a model to be emulated at both the Arab and African levels.” Tang expressed pride in the opening of WIPO’s new external office in Algeria, describing it as “a strategic platform to support creators and innovators in the region and a bridge for regional and international cooperation.” He added that “WIPO will continue to support Algeria in its efforts to harness the potential of youth and develop creative projects, enhancing its position as a reference hub for intellectual property in Africa and the Arab world.”
