Establishment of the General Union of Algerian Traders and Artisans in 1956 Embodied the Deep Bond Between the Liberation Revolution and the People

Algiers – Sunday, September 14, 2025

The Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, Laid Rebiga, affirmed today in Algiers that the establishment of the General Union of Algerian Traders and Artisans on September 13, 1956, embodied the profound connection between the Glorious Liberation Revolution and the Algerian people, according to a report by aps.dz.

Speaking at a historical symposium organized by the National Museum of the Mujahid under the theme “From the Liberation Struggle to the Challenge of Economic Development,” attended by the Union’s Secretary-General, mujahideen, and academic researchers, the minister stated that the formation of this professional organization in 1956 was “a milestone in the struggle that demonstrated the deep bond between the Glorious Liberation Revolution and the people. It confirmed the engagement of various societal segments in the epic fight to liberate Algeria from the yoke of French colonialism.”

The minister noted that the establishment of the General Union of Algerian Traders and Artisans came just days after the historic Soummam Congress (August 20, 1956), which laid out the political and military framework for the revolution. He highlighted the role of traders and artisans in the revolution through the creation of “support, financing, and information transfer networks, turning their shops and warehouses into bases of support for the revolutionaries.”

Rebiga also emphasized the noble values instilled by Algerian traders during the National Liberation Revolution, including discipline, sacrifice, and deep patriotism. On this occasion, he underscored the achievements and progress made under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, including “the launch of a series of structural and legislative reforms aimed at modernizing the commercial system, regulating economic activities, and improving the investment climate to transition toward a modern, diversified, and sustainable economy.”

The minister also referenced the recent significant event hosted by Algeria, the fourth edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair, noting its “resounding success,” which reflects “the prominent position Algeria has assumed in its continental and international environment.”
