Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival Responds to Egyptian Director El-Sharkawy

The Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival has officially responded to allegations made by Egyptian filmmaker Marwa El-Sharkawy on social media, clarifying the nature of her participation and firmly rejecting what it described as unfounded claims.

In an official statement released on Friday, the festival management stressed that the invitation extended to El-Sharkawy was transparent and clearly defined, as documented in the festival’s correspondence with her. Her participation was scheduled to begin on September 27, with her film screening planned for the following day.

However, the statement explained that El-Sharkawy herself requested to extend her stay in Algeria until October 5, beyond the duration (September 27–30) officially covered by the festival. She explicitly acknowledged this arrangement in an earlier email, writing that while the festival would cover her stay until September 30, she would finance her extended trip at her own expense to explore Algeria, as it would be her first visit.

The festival further clarified that El-Sharkawy attempted to pressure Air Algérie staff to grant her an open ticket without consulting the organizers, which led to logistical complications. Upon her arrival in Algeria, she failed to properly notify the festival management as required, and instead shared misleading claims on social media, which, according to the statement, had no basis in reality.

As a result, the festival has decided to completely and permanently withdraw El-Sharkawy’s film from the program of its fifth edition. It also reaffirmed its right to take legal action against any attempt to tarnish its reputation or question its integrity.

Despite this unfortunate incident, the Annaba Mediterranean Film Festival reiterated its deep respect for independent and emerging filmmakers, underlining its commitment to welcoming international guests in an atmosphere of dignity and cultural exchange. The statement stressed that the festival remains a prestigious cultural platform reflective of Algeria’s noble values and its people’s commitment to hospitality and mutual respect.
