Algiers – The President of the Council of the Nation, Azzouz Nasri, received on Monday the Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Algeria, Tran Quoc Khanh, in a meeting that highlighted the strength of bilateral relations between the two countries, rooted in a shared history of anti-colonial struggle and mutual solidarity.

At the beginning of the meeting, Nasri conveyed Algeria’s condolences to the Vietnamese people following the devastating “Bualoi” typhoon that struck Vietnam on Sunday, reaffirming Algeria’s readiness to provide assistance. He praised the resilience of the Vietnamese nation, noting that the 80th anniversary of its national day symbolizes the determination of a people who inspired liberation movements across Asia and Africa, recalling in particular the historic battle of Dien Bien Phu.

Nasri stressed the enduring depth of Algerian-Vietnamese relations, forged through the fight against French colonialism and strengthened by decades of cooperation. He underlined that more than sixty bilateral agreements have already been signed, with twenty additional accords currently under preparation, covering multiple fields of partnership.

He also welcomed the ongoing political consultations and joint committees between the two nations, citing the 12th session held in Hanoi in 2023, which opened new prospects for economic and scientific cooperation. Nasri emphasized that Algeria’s new investment and mining laws provide significant opportunities for foreign partners, including Vietnam.

On international issues, the President of the Council of the Nation reiterated Algeria’s firm positions in support of the Palestinian cause and the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. He commended Vietnam’s principled stance in advocating respect for international legality. Nasri also reaffirmed Algeria’s approach to resolving crises in the Sahel and Libya through dialogue, constitutional legitimacy, and regional security.

For his part, Ambassador Tran Quoc Khanh expressed Vietnam’s willingness to expand cooperation with Algeria in key sectors such as energy, agriculture, food industries, telecommunications, and culture. He emphasized that Algeria represents a promising gateway to Africa for Vietnam, just as Vietnam offers Algeria strategic access to Southeast Asia. He further congratulated Algeria on joining the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The meeting concluded with both parties underscoring the importance of enhancing parliamentary coordination between the Algerian Council of the Nation and the Vietnamese National Assembly, through the activation of friendship groups and increased exchanges of visits and expertise, as a means of consolidating institutional dialogue and strengthening cooperation.
