Algeria Gains Observer Status in ASEAN Parliamentary Assembly

Algeria has achieved a significant milestone in its international relations, securing observer status within the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). This accomplishment was celebrated by ambassadors from key ASEAN nations, marking a new chapter in Algeria’s engagement with Southeast Asia.

Ibrahim Boughali, Speaker of the People’s National Assembly of Algeria, received congratulatory messages from the ambassadors of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam – respectively, Chalief Akbar, Dato’ Rezani, Irwan Mohammad Mazlan, and Tran Quoc Khanh. Their messages conveyed warm wishes and acknowledged the importance of Algeria’s new role within AIPA.

The designation of observer status was granted during the 46th General Assembly of AIPA, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from September 18th to 20th, 2025. This event brought together parliamentary representatives from across the ASEAN region to discuss matters of mutual interest and further strengthen regional cooperation.

The People’s National Assembly emphasized that the ambassadors of the three nations, all founding members of ASEAN, specifically commended the dynamic nature of Algerian parliamentary diplomacy. This diplomacy actively seeks to expand cooperation with the Asian continent, particularly with Southeast Asian countries. Algeria’s proactive approach has been recognized as a valuable contribution to fostering peace, security, stability, and development in the region.

Algeria’s pursuit of closer ties with ASEAN aligns with its broader foreign policy objectives. By engaging with AIPA, Algeria aims to contribute to shared efforts in promoting regional stability and economic growth. The observer status provides Algeria with a platform to participate in parliamentary dialogues, share its experiences, and learn from the successes of ASEAN member states.

This development highlights Algeria’s commitment to strengthening its international partnerships and diversifying its diplomatic reach. The country views ASEAN as a vital partner in promoting multilateralism and addressing global challenges. The enhanced engagement with AIPA is expected to facilitate knowledge sharing, capacity building, and the exploration of opportunities for collaboration in various sectors, including trade, investment, and cultural exchange.

Ultimately, Algeria’s observer status in AIPA represents a significant step towards fostering closer ties between North Africa and Southeast Asia. It underscores the growing importance of inter-parliamentary cooperation in addressing shared challenges and promoting a more peaceful and prosperous world. Algeria’s active participation in AIPA is anticipated to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of ASEAN’s goals and the strengthening of international relations.
