Tebboune Oversees National Security, Drug Trafficking Measures

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, serving as Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, led a High Security Council meeting on Wednesday, according to a communiqué from the Presidency of the Republic. The session focused on several critical issues, including recent fires in the eastern and central regions of the country, strategies for combating drug trafficking, and the overall security situation both domestically and in neighboring nations.

During the meeting, an update was provided on the progress of rigorous security and scientific investigations into the fires, conducted by the Gendarmerie and National Security services. The findings of these investigations are expected to be announced during a joint meeting. The High Security Council emphasized the necessity of implementing the death penalty for crimes related to these types of fires, underscoring a strong stance against such destructive acts.

The Council also addressed the ongoing fight against drug trafficking. A significant decision was made to establish a specialized security body dedicated to combating this illicit activity, drawing inspiration from models in other countries, such as the United States of America. Furthermore, the meeting acknowledged and commended the efforts of the People's National Army (ANP) and various security services in their anti-drug operations. In a move to strengthen enforcement, it was decided to convert an ANP barracks located in the Tanezrouft region of the Grand Sahara into a high-security prison specifically for major drug lords and traffickers.
